The
Veolia Mardyke Trust can give grants to help improve the physical and
social environment in areas close to the landfill site in South Ockendon.
This includes:
•
South Ockendon and Belhus
•
North Stifford, Orsett and Bulphan
•
Stifford Clays
•
Blackshots and Grays, north of Lodge Lane
•
Aveley
•
Kenningtons
•
Purfleet, west of the railway line
Sometimes the Trust will also help other projects in Thurrock, or within
one mile of Thurrock’s borders, usually where there is a significant
benefit to people from the areas listed or there are other special circumstances.
All the schemes the
Trust can support must be schemes that the general public can benefit
from, not things that are for private profit. Examples of projects are
improvements to:
|
|
| • Village
or church halls or social clubs, where there is a range of organisations
that can use the hall, or where anyone can join for a reasonable fee
•
Almost anything to improve a public park, play area, or woodland open to
the public
•
Sports facilities and clubs that any member of the public can use or join
for a reasonable fee
•
Tree planting or community gardens on open spaces
•
Play areas, ball courts, skate parks, teenage meeting shelters, including
lighting for any of these
•
Repair and restoration of churches
•
Libraries and museums
•
Cycle paths, footpaths and bridleways
•
Repairs and restoration of buildings of historic or architectural interest
•
Projects to sustain local biodiversity

What
sort of improvements? If it’s a building, the Trust could help
with rewiring or re-roofing, kitchen improvements, replacement windows
or insulation, storage areas, and all sorts of other repairs or improvements;
outside: well, on public parks almost anything! The Trust doesn’t
normally provide more than £30,000 towards one project, unless
it’s an exceptional case.
The Trust can also sometimes help projects on school sites – but only
where the general community will also benefit, and can only provide funding
in proportion to the community use.
The Trust is also keen to support projects that encourage and involve youth
volunteering. If you are interested in a scheme to encourage youth volunteering
and would be based in Thurrock and benefiting people in the areas listed
above, then let us know.
Do you need match funding? Not necessarily. The Trust recognise that it takes
time and can be difficult to raise funds from several sources, so although
it always encourages groups to look for other sources of funds as well, it
is prepared to fund 100% of a project costs where necessary. It will take
into account the difficulty of raising additional funds when considering
projects.
Unfortunately the Trust is not allowed to help fund projects on allotment
sites (unless the public have access to a community facility within the site),
or public conveniences (except where they are on a park), or the grounds
of old people’s homes and day centres, or public car parks, minibus
services, or public transport.
